Terroir et cépages

The soil of the Costebelle commune is varied - both geographically and geologically speaking.

The ground is generally stony with sandy red brown clay. The stones retain the sun's heat during the day and slowly release it during the night. The soil's diversity is an important strength because it's the variety of its locations that lends the region's wines their originality.

The ground has a natural capacity for both retaining and releasing water. And, together with the region's climate, these prevailing conditions help to obtain tannins and generous levels of alcohol and lead to delicate, balanced wines (although the vines can suffer from dryness in certain years).

Finally, the landscape, which is structured on different levels and zones of hillside, has an excellent exposure that can only help the production of good quality wines.

The vineyard is made up mainly of red grapes, principally the Grenache Noir. On the other hand, the Mourvèdre is scarcely present, although the Syrah and the Carignan do both feature.

In addition, the Tulette vineyard is otherwise relatively old since 90 per cent of the vines were planted more than 15 years ago. It is important to underline the determination of the local winegrowers to produce their high quality red wines by significantly increasing the surface area of Syrah over the last few years to offer a more complete range of wines.
